Trustees

Steve Best

Chairman of Trustees

After 36 years with Abbey National/Santander, Steve took early retirement and has been volunteering for Barnabus since, in the Beacon and helping our van driver Alan. He is passionate about helping people off the streets, and seeking permanent solutions to their often complex problems.

Steve is married with two grown up boys and four grandchildren and is a former treasurer for the Chester and Stoke District of the Methodist Church. He loves playing rock-n-roll with a local band Phoenix Boys and singing with Manchester’s very own Halle’ choir.

Tim Elston

Treasurer

Tim is a partner in Percy Westhead & Company, a firm of Chartered Accountants in Manchester City Centre.

He joined Barnabus as a trustee in 2013 and uses his accounting experience in his role as treasurer to provide support and advice to the board and our finance staff.

Tim is married with two children and can often be found supporting at the side of a sports pitch or doing a spot of gardening. He is also treasurer of his local scout group.

John Price

Secretary

John has been a Trustee of Barnabus since 2002, and he became Chairman in 2011. During his working life, John spent his working life with various government departments, retiring from H M Revenue & Customs in 2014.

His work with the Forty Three Trust as an Associate Evangelist has seen him speak at Church Leader conferences in countries like Tanzania, Uganda, India and loads more around the world. John is also a Lay Canon of Webuye Cathedral in Bungoma, Kenya. A bit closer to home, he’s also a frequent speaker and many churches in and around the Manchester area.

Outside of his great work with Barnabus, choral music is one of John’s passions. You might just spot him belting out the hymns with several choirs in the Greater Manchester area.

Joanne Bliss

Trustee

Expand

Joanne qualified as a nurse in 1993 and has spent the majority of her career in the NHS as a District Nurse.

She is married with 2 grown up children, a foster daughter with learning difficulties and a cheeky bulldog called Denzel. In her spare time she loves to sing at her local church and with a community choir.

Sarah Lavelle

Sarah originally joined the Barnabus team in 2009 as a volunteer at The Beacon on Monday nights - a position she enjoyed for a few years.  She trained in private practice and qualified as a solicitor in 2011 before making a move to an in-house legal team four years ago, gaining commercial contracts experience within the healthcare industry.  Sarah enjoys swimming, hiking and good coffee!

Matt Lacey

Matt moved to Manchester to complete a MSc in Management at Alliance Manchester Business school. Since then he has worked in a range of digital roles from start-ups through to FTSE 100 global agencies, leading teams and operating at board level. Matt brings expertise in marketing & communications, data & digital and leadership & strategy.

Matt is married with a young daughter. He is a member of Vinelife Church Manchester. His hobbies include cooking, running and reading.

    Our wonderful volunteers are the heart of what we do and without them, we couldn’t do the work we do to get people housed. We have volunteers from all over Greater Manchester, as well as Cheshire and Lancashire, all age groups and all walks of life.

  • Homelessness in Manchester

    If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.

    Our history

    It all started in 1991 with one man, some sandwiches and a flask of hot coffee. Walking the streets of Manchester, our founder Peter Green could not believe that there were people on his doorstep who had nothing. So, with a little help from his Christian faith, he set out to do something. Luckily, Peter and his wife Beryl had plenty of love – and sandwiches – to share.
