Today the forecast was for heavy showers! What a difference a week makes. Three volunteers from Manchester City Council Building Department came down to help with the allotment. In spite of the rain Gary, John and Paul soon got to work on the path between the raised beds. They cleared and levelled the area which is not yet flagged. They also put down limestone chippings over some membrane which should prevent weeds growing through the stones. If we can find some 600 mm flags the path can be extended later this season. Many thanks to MCC for supporting Barnabus in this way.

Wendy put lime around the cabbage pants and cleared out last season’s sprout and sprouting broccoli plants as they had done their job and gone to seed. Colin helped to top up the bed with compost and rake it level. He also helped Jenny dig out more tree roots and helped to sow three rows of carrots. The last job of the afternoon was to clear leaves out of the downpipe which feeds the water butts. Thomas had noticed the water was not running very fast – and it had been pouring down!
