How can I help protect myself from coronavrirus?

Expand
  • Follow the social distancing rules
  • In most areas Local Authorities are providing hotel accommodation for people rough sleeping. Services are different in different towns and cities. Try to contact your local homelessness services to find out more. In Manchester please phone the rough sleeper team on 0161 234 4692 between 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. For referrals out of hours, call 0161 234 5001 but make sure you tell them that you may have Coronavirus.
  • Don’t bed down near to people or share tents with people that you have not already been sleeping near to
  • If you have a dog or another pet, keep it away from other people and other pets
  • Don’t share cigarettes, pipes or drink from the same bottles and cans
  • Wash your hands with soap and water often for at least 20 seconds. Use public toilets and if there is no soap available use hot/warm running water. It may be useful to carry a bottle of water and soap
  • Always wash your hands when you go into and leave buildings or public spaces
  • Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze. Toilet paper will do so try and collect some.
  • Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth unless your hands are clean
  • Use your elbows, arms and shoulders to open doors instead of your hands

What do I do if I think I have Coronavirus?

Expand

The NHS recommends isolating yourself for 7 days if you have either:

  • A high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back.
  • A new, continuous cough – this means you've started coughing repeatedly.

If you are rough sleeping, we realise self-isolating will be a challenge. We recommend that you contact support staff from a day centre, outreach team or local support service and let them know your situation.

Do not go to the service in person as this will increase risks for yourself and other people.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

This is why we work hard to make the Beacon a welcoming place

At Barnabus, we work hard to make our centre a welcoming place – one where the people who visit can trust us to always look out for their best interests. We build the Beacon in a way that best supports our friends on their journey away from the streets and into a home of their own. But sometimes, it can be lifesaving too. Here’s how…

  • Helping our friends overcome abuse

    Helping our friends overcome abuse

The people who Barnabus supports are often very vulnerable and can fall victim to various forms of abuse. Just recently, we helped two men who had faced two different types of abuse: Glen* and Keith*. Here, we explain how we were able to help Glen and Keith overcome their challenges, learn skills to avoid future abuse, and continue on their path to recovery.

  • Prison visits prevent inmates from ending up on the streets

Prison visits prevent inmates from ending up on the streets

At Barnabus, we work closely with the prison service and related organisations to support people who have been – or are just about to be released from – prison. Whether they’ve lost touch with family and friends or are unable to organise it themselves, many people leave prison without a fixed address or accommodation plans. This most often leads directly to homelessness. We work hard to prevent this before it happens.

  • New Home – New Future

    New Home – New Future

New Homes - New Future will enable us to have our very own supported property to promote recovery and independence for people who need more intensive support to learn how to thrive in a home. Empowering people who have been homeless to rebuild their lives and break free from the cycle of homelessness; to take hold of their dreams for the future and thrive in a home of their own.

  • Homelessness in Manchester

If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.

  • Our history

    Our history

It all started in 1991 with one man, some sandwiches and a flask of hot coffee. Walking the streets of Manchester, our founder Peter Green could not believe that there were people on his doorstep who had nothing. So, with a little help from his Christian faith, he set out to do something. Luckily, Peter and his wife Beryl had plenty of love – and sandwiches – to share.
