The Prisons

one of our clientsThe work undertaken by Barnabus in prisons centres on two local institutions, H.M.P. Buckley Hall for men, and H.M.P. Styal for women. In H.M.P. Styal we often come across women whom we have met on the red light district or through the Beacon. Their incarceration provides an excellent opportunity to spend time with and get to know these women better, establishing a stronger base from which to work when we have contact with them again on the outside.

The one to one time we have with both male and female inmates provides the opportunity to listen, encourage and where appropriate, pray with individuals. In both prisons we work with the chaplaincies to support inmates both practically and in their Christian faith.

Alongside the basic support work carried out, one of our main aims is to provide ‘through the gate’ support. Working with inmates, alongside other agencies, we are involved in the practical preparations for the release of an individual, meeting them at the gate and supporting them through initial appointments, referrals and transport to accommodation. Ongoing support is on offer and assistance with tasks such as setting up bank accounts or accessing education is available.

Members of our staff and volunteer team are also committed to visiting friends of Barnabus in other local institutions including H.M.P. Risley and H.M.P. Manchester. These visits often come about off the back of relationships built on the street or in the Beacon and are usually initiated by the individual who must first issue a visiting order before we can attend.
